The quality of the soap was often questionable but it got the job done.  These days a soap maker can choose from a wide variety of exotic oils, scents, colorants, grains and botanicals to make their own version of a perfect bar of soap. Soap has now transcended its humble beginnings to become a form of artistic expression - each bar as individual as the person creating it.
